Danish Royal Family attended 2019 New Year Reception

On January 1, 2019, members of Danish royal family attended the traditional New Year’s Levee and Banquet which is the first reception of the year held for the government and high-level officers. Queen Margrethe II hosted the reception at Amalienborg, Christian VII's Palace in Copenhagen. Queen Margrethe, Crown Prince Frederik, Crown Princess Mary, Prince Joachim, and Princess Marie were present at the reception. (Crown Princess Mary wore a maxi gown by Jesper Høvring).

    1. Agree. And I love her romantic tiara and earrings.
Marie's dress is is of a puristic elegance - beautiful.

  2. The queen looks fab, great dress in great colour!

Mary and Maries dresses are ok, quite nice but they don't have that 'wow'

    1. Well I don't think the queen looks fabulous; the colour is ok, but that is the only positive thing I would mention. I don't like the material used and above all I think it is time she stores away (definitely) this fur stole, for several reasons...
To me Marie is the winner today.

    2. She should let the mothball the furs. Also, way too much jewellery. I like Mary's and Marie's hairdos. Mary's dress overwhelms her.

  3. Both Mary and Marie look lovely. The queen has way too much jewelry. Very ostentatious.

    1. Nin Pujol, in my humble opinion it's only the Queen who can do this. She's the Queen of that lovely little country. (I liked her New Year's speech very much.) She looks majestic. I am sure, it's not a'n easy walk for her tonight without the Prince Consort.
Her daughters in law are a bit disappointing tonight. Nothing special about fashion then. Happy New Year!

    2. Sin Pujol, if you are looking at the same photos of the Queen, the jewels are one beautiful pearl parure: tiara, earrings, necklace; the rest are orders. She's the Queen of Denmark. If you like reading about royals you could also read about their history and circumstance.

  4. To me, Margrethe looks best here, her dress is gorgeous. I know, too much jewelry, but 'overdone' seems to be her signature ;-) The dress alone is awesome and the colour is great on her too.
Mary and Marie disappointed me, sorry. Their hair and jewelry are great, but I'm not a fan of both dresses. The colours, fabrics or cut... Can't put my finger on it.

    1. Agree, Margrethe looks fabolous. I always love her gala evening dresses. The cut of these dresses is unique and so much her. It‘s probably hard to wear jewels to a chain of orders anyway, but she does. Why not? She‘s the queen! She represents Denmark and she manages it well.

The Queen carries too many jewels.
Mary's dress not a winner … seems too heavy and too mottled pattern.
Marie with the same tiara as always and her dress not really a great gala dress ??
So not a WOW evening in my opinion!

The Queen looks beautiful.he colour of her dress is striking;the jewels match perfectly.

  7. Wow, everyone looks magnificent! Mary's hair is gorgeous, and I love this coral pink gown on Queen Margrethe. (Just get rid of the stomachers...blech...I will always wish they would be broken up and incorporated into beautiful brooches, tiaras, necklaces...)

  8. Thanks for the detailed photos. Only then one can appreciate the beauty of the dresses. Too many flashes kill gorgeous gowns very often. The Crown Princess's dress is stunning. The antique gold embroidery emphasizes the jewels perfectly! The flare of the skirt_exquisite. Princess Marie chose the unusual golden lace with...is it silk satin? Very royal. The Queen brightened up the first day of 2019 to Happy New Year! for all of us.

    well matched &
    not overshadowing the Queen

I love Mary's dress. It is different to her previous years 1st January ball gowns. The print and style suits her beautifully. I like when she choose Jesper Hovring designs, they seem to be made for her.

I like the JH design on the model ……without jewels, but not the way Mary wears it together with the order of the elephant - and the tiara in another color of gold!
Too much 'bling' … though they are real jewels!
Queen Margrethe and Marie are dressed as we know them…no surprise there!
Sor to say it…… but they are not so elegant for this, the finest event of the year as the Swedish royals were for the Nobel events!r

Margrethe wins by a mile. Unflattering top on Marie and Mary looks a little underwhelming.

  16. I bet the Queen is not member of PETA... In my opinion if someone has the desire to look regal in fur then should have the desire for a dentist as well (if the colouring is due to any kind of pills she takes then I apologise) this time princess Marie is the winner for me, but the CPrincess is beatiful either.

    1. Whilst I agree her teeth are rather stained (from smoking, I would say) I can't see the link to the fur.

    2. The link seems to be that M would look more regal if she did not have stained teeth

    3. Somewhat tenuous then IMO. She looks regal a lot, stained teeth notwithstanding.

    4. My birthday is 4 months before Queen Margrete and my teeth also are yellowed with age. We will be 80 years old soon and I think she is doing quite well. Its not easy being next to 2 lovely daughters-i-law. I do think the fur is hideous.

Mary's dress & parure is excellent! Marie's is a richer color would have suited her coloring well.

Dear Queen Margrethe, please release this fur back into the wild !!

All these tiaror and dresses are for people who believes in fariytails and costume drama.....fashion for big girls with minds and dreams like a 5 years old child.Cinderella story

    1. Unusual way of putting it, Mina. The men's outfits will be ceremonial versions of the armed forces in Denmark--I am afraid I don't know enough about military uniforms to know which ones. Formal ballgown evening dresses are the accepted dress for these events. They would look very out of place in business suits or standard 21st century day dress. For me, the Queen is the winner here with that beautiful coral dress. I do like Mary's dress but as Rosalyn says, I feel there is something not quite right about it--perhaps too much material in the skirt? The top of Marie's outfit is beautiful but the skirt less so. Always a great start to the year to see this lovely family out "on parade" Good health and happiness to them in the year ahead.

    2. Why follow this blog 😂

    3. Mina, you are absolutely entitled yo your own sociopolitical opinion, but what are you doing on this forum? Obviously looking at pictures of people and fashion that you clearly dislike, and then disrespecting the people that visit this site, comparing them to 5 years old. As an example I don't hunt, or climb mountains or follow ice hockey, therefore I don't enter on blogs that pertain to those subjects, and belittle the participants, so maybe is time for you to move on, or continue to devoure royal fashion in private, but abstaining from judging the readers with such misplaced superiority.
Now to fashion....I find the Queen's dress rather old fashioned, don't like the material or the excessive fabric, and with the amount of jewels it's just overdone, she would look so good with more simple and age appropriate silhouette, I won't even mention the fur. Mary's dress , although dark, it manages to be delicate and elegant. Marie looks pretty as usual, but, IMO that top would have looked much better with an A shaped skirt, preferably of matte material, I won't say that the total effect is terrible, but not a winner for me.
Happy New Year to all of you, and may 2019 bring you much health, peace and love!!!

Princess Marie's dress and the width of the skirt makes her look stunning, when the wind makes it "move" on pics taken outdoors! She looks classic and graceful ... Marie is the winner with me! on photos taken outdoors (seen on Paris MATCH)! Marie looks classic and graceful ... she is the style winner tonight!

  22. Meh for everyone except the queen. She knocks it out of the park (although I wish she would leave the rug and at least half the jewels at home).
The men look just silly - I say that every year and they still won't listen, lol.

  23. Nice outing - great to see them all out for this. Have to say none of the looks wow me. The Queen does look very regal, Marie looks fine and I find Mary's look a bit odd - somehow the material of the dress says daywear to me rather than sumptuous evening gown.

Queen Margrethe's dress is recycled and really nice without the fur stole, IMO. Mary's dress resembles vintage from the 50's ? …… and would look better at one 50++!
Marie in simple dressed gala fits well with the many jewels.

CP Marys dress does not even look good on the model. Only Letizia could pull it off, if so.

  27. I love this Danish New Year Reception when it ends quite santorially boring Christmas season. Mary looks WOW, every inch modern princess. That Edwardian tiara of her is so delicate and beautiful. Marie looks very nice too. Queen looks more like Christmas three, too much everything really. She has also had this gown SO many times, I am rather bored to it (and tomorrow´s blue fur sleeve dress she has every year). Hope she is well, because she looks a bit sick in my eyes. About men, the hats of the parade uniforms look really quite silly.

not particularly impressed by either outfit. the queen needs to relinquish the fur stole to set a proper example to the new generation. Whilst certain royal traditions are what makes them great, this savage one need to evolve with the times and people's level of contentiousness versus pointlessly killing innocent animals. Even without the stole, te dress isn't one that has the best cut nor does it fit her to show her figure to any particular advantage.

Mary's dress ages her. Also, she knew how many jewels / orders she had to wear - why choose such a busy and fussy pattern and cut? like others said, the model looks significantly better with lot less accessories.

And what is Marie wearing? other than lots of gold. Sorry, I cannot believe she picked such a totally tacky outfit.

Hoping for a much better series of outfits from the Danish RF in the upcoming months. They all can so so much better! Each and every one of these ladies impressed me multiple times - so here's to a great new year to everyone and.. some improved sartorial choices.

I do not care for this bright coral color on Margrethe. Definitely not a fan of the fur for many reasons already mentioned and yes I also, do not think that stained yellow teeth are very regal. I do however, like Mary and Marie's dresses. They are quite different from each other, but both ladies look great. I like the darker color and pattern on Mary and Marie looks quite regal in this fabric and color.
