On January 10, 2025, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex visited the Pasadena Convention Center, which is currently serving as an evacuation site for victims of the Eaton wildfire originating in nearby Altadena. The Duke and Duchess met with victims of the Los Angeles wildfires, as well as first responders who were on the frontlines combating the fires. The couple lives in Montecito, near Santa Barbara, about 148 kilometers from Los Angeles.
During their visit, the Duke and Duchess donated clothing, children’s items, and other essential supplies to the main donation center. Organizations like José Andrés’ World Central Kitchen, a longtime partner of The Archewell Foundation, are providing meals to both first responders and fire victims.
Actress Jamie Lee Curtis donated one million dollars to a fund supporting those impacted by the ongoing fires, which I think is great and helpful.
ReplyDeleteThat is great - maybe the duke and duchess don’t choose to advertise how much they and Archwell have donated? Harry and Meghan are encouraging everyone who can help to help. At this terrible time let’s support all help in different ways from whomsoever is able to offer it. LRB

DeleteCash seems to be a practical early help. Nothing first responders and cleanup crews need less than visiting celebrities and their bodyguards into disaster zones. Different when it is dignitaries directly associated with the locale, who are assessing for funding. And all of it best kept low profile with no photos.
DeleteAll help is appreciated if it's just through donation or letting people know they are seen. Listening, and asking what can we help with? What have we helped with ourselves I guess the question is.
DeleteI agree with LRB. They also opened their house to receive people who were in danger.
DeleteOh, have you see they have opened their home for loved ones in need, volunteering, serving food, caring about people, donated money, supplies, childrens clothes, food, asking how they can help now and in the future. Weird, hah? What did you say when K&W donated the astonishing amount of £3,500 to a food bank? There is something
Deletewrong with the people of this world. We, as a human race, have grown into selfish, nasty, self-centered, nasty people. What happened to helping your neighbour. Giving from your heart. I bet some of the nastiest people we see on this blog think they are Christian, too, even when they live, speak, and act against what their faith stands for. They probably think going to church on Sunday helps being a bully during the week.

DeleteCan you please behave as adults 🤦♂️🤦🤦♀️
ReplyDeleteWhat is that?
DeleteDon’t see any childish comments myself
DeleteThe disgustingly bad behavior of some people here doesn't even stop during a disaster. This is not the time for attacks. Thousands of structures have been destroyed, lives have been lost, and there is very little containment of the fires. More lives are expected to be lost, more homes and buildings will be lost, and the end is not in sight. I can only assume that those attacking ANYONE during a time like this has never experienced a natural disaster, especially on this scale. Harry and Meghan are doing what so many people are doing, well-known or not. These communities come together, offer aid, find out what is needed, and do their best to meet those needs. To single them out because some pictures were taken and published is simply hateful. These are not posed photos, they are not dressed to impress, and don't even try to say they arranged for these photos to be taken. The media is crawling all over the various evacuation centers. There is around the clock coverage on the news. Harry and Meghan served food anonymously, wearing masks. They have already donated through the Archwell Foundation and reportedly will offer continued support for recovery and rebuilding efforts. They have opened up their home to friends that were evacuated. Donations of time and money are needed for the victims. They have lost everything. To attack any person offering support is immature and offensive. It would be nice to see some maturity in the comments during this tragedy. The nasty comments can resume on another occasion.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your wise words, 14:48!

As per my own earlier comment I agree with everything you said say. The hatred for H&M here and elsewhere at this time is seriously concerning. They are doing what they always do and they have not taken photographers.. they are famous , like it or not, so others are taking and I suspect SELLING photos of them. H&M are rolling up their sleeves and helping practically and financially. I thank them and so many others. LRB

ReplyDeleteDid you see the devastation? or actress Garner on TV talking about how she is trying to help? Is PR a new buzzword, like a band aid/plaster for every cut?
Delete"It is easier to remain silent and be thought a xxxx than type nonsense and remove all doubt".
I usually keep myself from commenting on the Sussexes. But what on earth are they even doing there? Gawking at homes the fire took away in no official capacity at all? Do they represent the Californian authorities? Surely not. Yes, this is something that royals would do - in their own country, when something dreadful had happened, for moral (and also financial by way of Government) support. But - the USA are not a monarchy, nor do they have approved of Harry and Meghan to represent them in any shape, way, or form. Are there any other celebs out and about publicly, keeping police, firefighters, officials from the government, and other important helpers, from doing their work, for PR purposes? I think not. Ever since Meghan had to face a huge backlash on her Netflix cooking show, she desperately tries to spin her negative PR into a more positive one (again!), and this - imho - is part of this strategy. Sorry, but I don't buy into her "humanitarian" story any longer. She is doing things like that for attention grabbing purpose only. Sorry that I don't have to say anything nice today, but I'm quite fed up with them both by now.
ReplyDeleteAgree!
DeleteOh my God, DSC, give us a break, please. I hope you had kept yourself from commenting this time too. They are not there in any official capacity, surely, but as fellow Californians -- same as everyone else trying to help those who have lost everything in the fires. The photos were taken by some random photographer without their permission, probably with a zoom lens from afar. Should they have stayed away just because they are who they are? Do you deny them everything? Just because you have bought into all the trash the tabloids have fed you about them over the years? You really should be sorry for hating somone on a day like this. As I said to another poster earlier, I wish a more understanding and compassionate year 2025 to you too.

Insane comment. They aren't representing anyone but themselves. In your head there was bad PR in reality nearly 100 million people watched that trailer. Trying to help in a disaster? How terrible! They were talking to people who lost their homes that could probably use support from some of those charities they recommended giving to if you wanted to help not to cops or firefighters maybe actually look at the footage. Nevermind people like you will act like they're harming children and kittens.
DeleteGrow up! Your characterization of them is way off. Your assumptions about their actions are inaccurate. They weren't on a "gawking" tour of the fire areas. I realize by adding that descriptor, you were trying to make them sound as bad as possible, but it only succeeds in making you sound bad. Why would you even suggest that "the USA" does not approve of them "representing" the US "in any shape, way, or form"? They, nor anyone else, needs government approval to give aid. They have a foundation that needs to know the extent of the aid needed, and to discover how they can help. You also have absolutely no idea how stupid you sound by saying they are keeping first responders from their jobs. The firefighters are on the fire lines, miles from the evacuation centers. No one is being pulled from their work. Logistically, your accusations are impossible. There are politicians and fire and police officials that are the spokespersons in these times. They never render aid personally because it is not their job. Saying "you don't buy into her "humanitarian" story any longer" goes to show how little you know about someone you hate so much. Meghan did humanitarian work long before ever meeting Harry. You should at least do your homework before blathering on. You hate them so much that you are creating a narrative to support your opinions. Can you not, for just this once, give up your hate campaign during a time of crisis? You admit you don't have anything nice to say, so why say anything at all? You must have been brought up better than that. Have some class. The focus needs to be on helping the fire victims, not your petty agenda.
DeleteFair comment.
Delete16:05 you have bottomed out
DeleteI am on no "petty agenda", and I try to comment wisely and fair whenever possible. However, I am just voicing my opinion now on Harry and Meghan, as others often do here - on them as well as on other persons featured on this platform. I am no hater (not at all), you will find that I either keep my mouth shut before saying something truly vile, or that I will voice criticism in a moderate way when I think fashion had gone wrong, and that applies to all royal/famous people on this blog, and is not only directed towards the Sussexes. I regularly would "roast" (mildly) Grandduchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg for her fashion choices, just as an example. But never in a truly mean way.
DeleteFor those wanting to donate as well: Here is a link to the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation: https://supportlafd.org/ Of course, I do deeply care about the impact the fire has/had!
Delete@ DSC 16:01
DeleteBeyond royalty, beyond any personal feeling toward the Sussexes, there is just one thing that should've refrained you from wording out your hideous comment.
It's called sense of pity or empathy, at least this is the definitions used by humans with their hearts in the right place.
Just focus on the victims, on DEATH for once in your life.
Respect for the dead, do you know what I am talking about?
Respect for lost lives.
RESPECT.
No more fighting, no more hideous comments from you, please.
I'm beginning to suspect that you hate both the living and the dead.
You are creepy.
Please, stop.
You can tell that DSC is the type of person who sees a tragedy in her community as someone else's problem, an inconvenience, and stays behind her locked door with the curtains drawn refusing to offer a crust of bread to the hungry. or a bottle of water to the thirsty.
Delete@DSC You did not comment wisely or fairly. You said many things that are not true or are exaggerated or twisted to support your hatred. It is simple enough to do a little bit of research before making claims like you did. You assert that you "either keep my mouth shut before saying something truly vile, or that I will voice criticism in a moderate way," yet you failed on both counts. Don't try to wiggle your way out of your original commentary. You may do better with your fashion critiques, but you have failed when it comes to this situation.
DeleteWhy my post hasn't appeared when all this vile toxic crap is being spewed, Idk? Do any of you understand the loss and deviation? They have nothing left, no where to go! So what Harry and Meghan brought needed supplies and helped out? If it was me and my family, I'd except help from Satan himself at this point!! DeleteDSC, I completely agree with you. It does seem odd for Harry and Meghan to be involved in such events without an official capacity, especially in a country where they have no formal role. It often comes across as more about self-promotion than genuine humanitarian work, especially when you consider how carefully they seem to manage their public image. It's hard to take their "humanitarian" efforts seriously when they often appear to be seeking attention rather than truly contributing in a meaningful way. I understand your frustration—it's difficult to separate their actions from their PR strategy at this point.

Could you please consider removing the diatribes of hate against Harry and Meghan, above? No other people you cover are attacked like this. It’s hate and actually sickening. Thank you.
ReplyDelete👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
DeleteThe hate against them is amazing. Say what you want about Meghan, but to me she seems like a person who is disciplined, hard working and not a quitter. Some of her projects failed and she is brutally criticized for starting yet another project. But what I see is a woman who picks herself up and is trying again and again, and this under a very hostile public opinion. Frankly, if I was in her shoes I would have folded long time ago. Her opinions and politics might clash with a lot of people, but she comes off as a hard worker, and I admire that about her. No wonder Harry called her publicly an amazing wife shortly into their marriage. (In comparison it took Kate over 10 years of marriage and cancer for her husband to call her publicly an amazing wife.) Meghan as a young woman before she married was way more accomplished professionally and financially than Kate was. If you recall the Queen told Kate that she needed to carry her own weight before she got married, (how embarrassing) then she took a part time position buying jewelry for her parents’ business. She never started a business on her own, or made millions from working (anything) like Meghan did. But she did mention a couple of times when asked what was like to be a princess that she was well taken care of. That’s nice Kate, but keep it to yourself. Abby

DeleteWhat's astonishing is that comments are approved after reading, and still hate and nastiness is allowed through when it comes to these two, but if you joke about someone else deleted. Why have an admin at all?
Delete@Abby, I agree with you.
DeleteAbby, While Meghan’s perseverance and ability to keep trying despite criticism are admirable, it’s hard to ignore the fact that her actions often seem strategically timed to maintain public attention. She certainly had a successful career before her marriage, but the constant focus on self-promotion and PR efforts sometimes overshadows any genuine impact she might want to make. As for Kate, her journey has been different, but it’s been about quietly and steadily fulfilling her royal duties, without the same level of public drama. The contrast between their approaches to royal life is undeniable, but it's worth remembering that both women have faced their own unique pressures and challenges.
DeleteDSC - I hope you are not one of those bitter British people who cannot seem to get past the Sussexes leaving. Do you not realize that your own royal family does nearly EVERYTHING for PR? Harry and Meghan no longer represent the British Royal Family, and for some brits, it seems this has broken their common sense and common decency. They represent Archewell now, and as Harry said before, service is universal. Why can't they show up somewhere and try to help? Because they're not doing it on your terms? Everything Kate and William and KCIII and Camilla and the Edinburghs and everyone else does is for PR. It's to get a message across to England that they care. Only God can judge, but the British press and many royalists have set themselves up to judge this couple in ways that I hope no one ever judges you in turn. It is truly sad. I'm SO with Fergie. She doesn't judge, and neither should you or anyone else. Why can't you just celebrate the royals you've got left instead of bashing and judging those who left? Brava, Harry and Meghan for the good you're doing now.

Yes yes yes , dsc is right - and we can go on all night.
DeleteOpinion is opinion!!
To 16.06: do you see what i see?
DeleteAnon 17.23 I understand your frustration, but I think it's important to acknowledge that while the royal family does engage in PR efforts, it’s usually tied to their official duties and the role they play in the British monarchy. Harry and Meghan, on the other hand, have chosen to step away from those roles, and their actions often seem more centered on personal branding and managing public perception rather than official service.
DeleteThat being said, I do agree that they have every right to do charity work through Archewell and other ventures. If they truly want to make a positive impact, I think it’s commendable that they continue to show up and try to help in their own way. The issue, however, is that their involvement in public matters can sometimes come across as more about drawing attention to themselves than about the causes they claim to champion.
I agree that judging anyone harshly isn’t productive, and we all deserve to be treated with kindness and respect. But there is a difference between offering support for their work and acknowledging that their path hasn’t been without controversy.

ReplyDeleteWas your comment really necessery?
Yes to show how biased the comments against H&M are . Proving the double standards. LRB
DeleteThough I am not a Meghan fan, there is nothing wrong with them offering to help. They have the time and money to do so as many celebrities are doing. As stated above this is not a photo shoot, cameras are everywhere. Their foundation has a famous chef so I would think he has called them or they have offered to help in the kitchen he has set up. The situation in LA is beyond belief and shocking to those who have never experienced real hardship. Anyone that can help agencies who have the expertise in these catastrophic situations should do so.
ReplyDeleteTotally agree with you, Anon 18 39, and well said without going into detail either for or against the Sussexes. I'm not a Meghan fan either but if their presence at this disaster cheers any of those whose life is in turmoil, then well done.
DeleteWhy the need to include "I am not a Meghan fan"? The post would have been just as valid at "if their presence...."
DeleteThe husband WAS there but let's not miss an opportunity to garnish a statement with a sprinkle of dislike. Congratulations!
They did at least one good thing. Anyone reading this webpage will learn that there is an evacuation center at the Pasadena Convention Center and they are accepting donated items. If they have had a relationship with the World Central Kitchen, behind the scenes all this time and people reading here are just learning about it now, then give them the benefit of the doubt. Harry started the Invictus Games, he has contacts with others internationally
ReplyDeleteFor all we know, he is communicating with them behind the scenes, so if there is any international generosity, it could get facilitated logistically. Chris L.
At this time, news agencies from all over the world are positioned to gather information. They come across the Sussexes quietly helping to do their part (wearing masks at one point) and report on it. There is one news report where the studio is urging the reporter to go over for an interview when they are recognized. The reporter was uncomfortable with the idea and chose not to. As soon as they left, the reporter interviewed the mayor who spoke with them. Then @19:04 suggest that they are somehow seeking attention. Some people come out of the house to help while others flog the keyboard. How difficult is it to understand that they have no control over who chooses to report the news?? Has it not become obvious yet that these news agencies scour the accounts of friends etc. on FB, IG, her old TIG looking for material to write articles to feed the gullible?

I’m curious—where did you come across this information? I haven’t seen that specific report and would love to know more about it.
DeleteNothing brings out the trollish language like a Meghan post. “Grow up” etc is just so out of line. We are strangers to one another so let’s speak nicely. We can state opinions without criticising one another.
ReplyDeleteThank you 20:2. Most sensible comment so far.
DeleteYou single out the "Grow up" comment and ignore the rest? It is obvious that some people here have a tremendous lack of compassion. Some adult behavior is what is needed, and it is definitely lacking in some. You are correct when you say we are all strangers here, so we should be kind. Why doesn't that apply to Harry and Meghan or any other royal we comment on? Each and every one of them are complete strangers to us. None of us has the personal knowledge about any of these people to make some of the assertions that are made regularly. Even if the people that despise Harry and Meghan can't be swayed by that argument and feel compelled to continue to bash them, isn't it reasonable to believe that two things can be true at once? They could be as some people here believe, yet be doing a good deed at the same time.
DeleteYou should understand the realities of what is going on in Southern California. None of these fire victims will be made whole by insurance or federal aid. Some have no fire insurance at all because insurance companies just cancelled fire policies, and it is nearly impossible to find another company willing to issue fire insurance. Imagine losing every possession you have, your home, and in some cases, your pets. Imagine being in the group of people that just lost their insurance, so you can't afford rebuild unless you are wealthy. A lifetime of hard work and memories are gone in a matter of minutes. Many don't even have jobs anymore because businesses have been destroyed. Now imagine being forced to live in a shelter because you have nowhere else to go, maybe not even a car (you may have seen news footage of people abandoning their cars and running on foot). When people come to those shelters to offer support and tell the victims they are going to help however they can, it becomes the only hope some of these people have. It doesn't matter who is offering support, it becomes a lifeline.
I have several family members, friends, and co-workers that have lost homes, or whose homes have been damaged, because of wild fires throughout California over the past 30 years. I can promise you that any one of them reading some of the things written here would have been crushed to have their small glimmer of hope dashed. We should all remember, as Anon 14:32 said, "There but for the grace of God go I."

There have been many famous people that have chosen to donate quietly. Others have not, regardless at this point we all should focus on what we can do to help, and pray that the fires cease. Michael Douglas has matched the amount his parents charity has donated, that was set up in both the late Douglas's memory, and he has put forth the equivalent to the American Red Cross. It may be that your ignorance is due to the fact that you have never experienced anything like this where you live and are believing lies that you have read somewhere. Could it be that you don't fully understand where shelters are opened in relation to out-of-control fires? Why are you stating misinformation as fact? Volunteering in a shelter does not put anyone near the fires, the burned area(s), or stop first responders from doing their jobs.
DeleteVery nervy of you to suggest that you know how to run a non-profit organization better than a man who grew up in a family/institution that has been involved in volunteering and aiding causes for generations. Do you suggest that they work "quietly" so you don't hear about anything positive they do? It wouldn't help the negative narrative you are spreading for others to know they are actually doing some good in the world, would it? Do you further suggest that they should ignore their neighbors to the south in this time of need because it doesn't fit your portrayal of them?
Anon 17.05 It’s important to differentiate between personal opinions and objective facts. While I agree that volunteering in a shelter can be a valuable way to help, there’s a distinction between providing support in a crisis and the public display of that support. Many people feel that high-profile figures, like Harry and Meghan, should be mindful of how their presence is perceived, especially in situations where it could be seen as drawing attention away from the real heroes—first responders and local officials.
DeleteAs for the non-profit work, I’m sure their intentions are good, and they have a lot of experience with charitable causes. However, when it comes to public perception, it's valid to question whether some actions are truly about service or more about public relations. There’s a balance between doing good quietly and maintaining a positive public image, and sometimes that balance is difficult to strike. It’s not about ignoring the good work they may do, but rather about how it aligns with the broader message they want to send.
Chef José Andrés, a native of Spain and founder of World Central Kitchen (WCK), was just awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, along with 18 others including Pope Francis, by President Joe Biden. It is the highest honor a civilian can receive. WCK has been in partnership with the Archewell Foundation since 2020. The number of meals Chef Andrés has served throughout the world (over 400 million) to families impacted by conflict and natural disasters is staggering.
ReplyDelete@6:42 Handing food to tired first responders anonymously is disingenuous? The mayor himself said that they had been there all day and were only recognized at the end of the day when they took the masks off? First responders usually set up a staging site well away from the disaster to regroup and change shifts. That was probably the site because the governor's wife was also there.
ReplyDeleteWhat a studied lack of media literacy and critical thinking skills? Never consume news that is fed to you without asking who wants you to know that information and why. Do the Sussexes advertise their successes and failures or do the Br media, contact everyone and every office they come into contact with, then create articles that are regurgitated as the absolute truth as at 6:42.
Multiple projects seem to be outside of the Sussex skill set, so thankfully you have now decided to steer them in the direction of success, .... the quiet methodical kind that only 'she' has spoken about even though in the James Corden interview, Harry clearly said that he will continue his charity work no matter where he is.
Doing charity costs money. Therefore, they have to do a mix of commercial projects, and fund raising in order to donate to the 'quiet methodical projects'.

DeletePleace come back to Great Britain, we all you, Meghan and Harry, and we miss you!
ReplyDelete"America is a great place to live I can do things here with my kids that I would not be able to do in the UK". Harry / Dealbook conference.
DeleteAnd i thought its about fashion here
ReplyDeleteThere is a similar article in one of the English tabloids which allows readers to make comments.
ReplyDeleteThe commentators seem to have pleasure in tearing the Sussexes to shreds.
Not much said about the tragedy.
Just how low can we go?
Deadeggs, it seems, you got it completely wrong....
DeletePerhaps, because it looks as if it is not about the fires for some ex royals
Delete@deadeggs As low as the moderator allows. Commenters have asked many times over the years to stop posting these tabloid type comments. As you have stated, there are other venues that encourage toxic discussions. It saddens me to see the change to this fashion blog. I have come here for years and have watched the slow decline from fashion commentary to full on hate speech. I think we have hit a new low this time.
DeleteLow. The sad thing is that with british tabloids we expect that, considering they have been blacklisted by Harry and have their own hate agenda. This blog on the other hand should have a higher standard. Still waiting for the standard to kick in though.
DeleteThank you Helen! Thank you for cleaning up the comments. You are appreciated.
ReplyDeleteCleaning up?
DeleteThere is still cleaning to do...
DeleteTo all the haters who made it through despite repeated requests for decency: the words you put down will catch up with you. There is a balance in this world and you will get it all back - it will come when you are less expecting it and you will regret it if there will be an ounce of humanity left in you.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile, maybe a trip to a physician to assess your health might be in good or. Perfect the hormones need a reset. Worth checking.
CH
CH, this is a dreadful and threatening comment.
DeleteHat CH gerade versucht, Leser zu verfluchen?
DeleteIt’s a reality. No one is threatening anyone. Just how things happen in life. Everything is connected. Lack of respect and hate attracts bad events. Just how it works.
DeleteSorry to the German speaking Anon. I won’t have time to check the translation. It’s alright anyway. I don’t really mind any comments, we are all entitled to our opinion. Just not to gratuitous hateful rhetoric.
CH
To anon ch, the german comment is not hate at all. You have the time to translate, but to write alberne things?
DeleteCh what do you feel a "reality"? We all live in our bubble.
DeleteAny comments regarding Catherine leave her out of this rubbish
ReplyDeleteThank you Helen for moderating some of the worst comments. We need and want this to be a safe place, and I for one enjoy your coverage of a wider range of ladies than just the working royals. Onwards and upwards, and let’s all try to think of the victims of these terrible fires. LRB
ReplyDeleteSOS to Queen Max;
ReplyDeleteWe need her back to help get some order into this FASHION blog. 😁
And tada, here she is!
DeleteSuper. help has come at last.
ReplyDeleteNow - should we start with the hair or the pussy bow on the blouse? 😏
Harry and Meghan did something good with this visit.Let it just stay with that.
