Norway's Queen Sonja Recovers After Pacemaker Surgery

Queen Sonja was discharged from the Rikshospitalet today following the pacemaker surgery

Doctors decided to insert a pacemaker after 87-year-old Queen Sonja was taken to the hospital a few days earlier due to a rapid heartbeat experienced during a skiing trip. The procedure was carried out at the Rikshospitalet in Oslo on January 16, 2025. Norway’s royal court said the operation had been a success and that Queen Sonja was doing well. Queen Sonja was discharged from the Rikshospitalet today following the procedure.

I'm happy for this lovely Queen that she went ahead with the restorative medical procedure to improve her health condition, and thereby also serving as an example to so many women (and men) who are afraid or reluctant to have a pacemaker. I wish Queen Sonja all the very best.

Anon 9:13, interesting perspective on pacemakers. From my experience they are recommended when the heart’s electrical system is showing dangerous faults, and would be rarely be seen as optional (in rich countries). Without a pacemaker you’ll die and with one you’ll feel rapidly so much better normally gets people through any reluctance!

The Queen's heart rate is too low, and the pacemaker has been inserted to adjust this, and prevent her from passing out. Inserting a pacemaker is a routine operation, where the patient is awake. So not exactly
open heart surgery 😉 Why people has a pacemaker is not one reason fits all. For some people it's life or death, but not for all. For some it's just to have a better quality of life. In younger patients, it is common to perform an ablation, while older patients receive a pacemaker. It has become common for the elderly to get a pacemaker since it's quite normal they have a slower heart rhythm.

Lovely to see her looking so well. I must say it was disturbing to hear she had an accident on her skiing trip, then to hear she had a pacemaker implanted. I wish her the very best, she one lady I admire so much. She is the epitome of class and style.

Strong lady to come through the procedure and then look so confidently and smiling. She made the effort to see that her hair and makeup were perfect and wearing a lovely colorful scarf. Pretty amazing.
