The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh are making a four-day visit to Malta. On October 7, 2024, the Duke and Duchess were welcomed by the Prime Minister of Malta, Dr. Robert Abela, and his wife, Dr. Lydia Abela, at the Auberge de Castille in Valletta, on the first day of their visit to Malta to mark the 60th anniversary of Malta's independence and celebrate the country's shared heritage and continuing collaboration with the UK.

  1. Both the DOE and Dr. Abela's dresses are nice. I'd like the DOE's better if it was a couple of inches shorter.

I really like Dr. Lydia Abela’s dress on her - such a pretty color and a nice fit.

Other than the colours, I don't really like either dress. Dr. Abela's dress has style potential but needs some shape to avoid looking too tent-like, and Sophie's dress looks very ordinary and 'blah'..made worse by the not surprising too long length.

I wonder if Sophie is singlehandedly trying to bring back Victorian dress. In six more months, we may stop seeing her ankles. She looks so much more youthful in shorter dresses.

  4. Nice to see the present Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh visit Malta where the previous Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh lived so happily in the early 1950s! Love the photo of Duchess Sophie and Dr Abela walking along chatting to each other. This time , I think both dresses are too long but the colour is also a fail for Sophie imo. Nice hair, make up and shoes and her usual lovely smile.

  6. The pale pink dress looks superb, the pleating looks good, the dress moves well. Love the addition of the brooch. Her shoe color is perfect. The Duchess looks lovely. Her dress is feminine looking, her accessory color is good.

Sophie proves you don’t need to be stick thin to be beautiful. I do find almost all her dresses would improve by being a little shorter. The extra length always makes her look dowdy, in my opinion. LRB

For som reason I don't like this dress. Like sleeves like this. Have one myself, but can't put my fingeer on what 'i don't like. Pattern not my cup of tea, but thats ok. It just looks frumpy. This dress is also to short to be maxi and to long to be midi so odd lenght.

Its a really nice charming dress. But again too lo g like all her dresses. If you look at the model you see that the length should be at her calfs not at your feet. Why cannot a taylor put a hem in every dress that hangs on her feet

Sophie just doesn't seem to be a fashion person any longer. She had such a good run several years ago when she made herself over and looked great all the time with wonderfully tailored, well-styled looks. The great thing is, it seems her focus is now on her role and doing her best on her engagements, and her hair and makeup are always lovely. But fashion-wise, she's just lacking or perhaps it's no longer a priority for her.

I am trying hard to find something nice to say about this outfit. It’s not fitting well, hemline is too long, is she also wearing dark coloured tights?

Maltese First Lady on the other hand looks very nice. Kudos to her.
